Heathwood's John O'Cain Steps Down as Girls Basketball Coach

Thursday, March 3, 2016

Heathwood Hall Head Girls Basketball Coach John O’Cain has stepped down after seven years at the helm of the Lady Highlander program.  In O’Cain’s tenure, the Highlanders collected four straight SCISA Region I-AAA titles, finished as the state runner-up in 2013, and captured the 2014 SCISA state title.

In the seven-year span, O’Cain coached 10 All-State players, three Region I-AAAPlayers of the Year, one Gatorade State Player of the Year, one McDonald’s All-American, and one Naismith National HS Player of the Year.  His former players include current collegiate athletes Victoria Dickerson (Benedict), Gadson Lefft (Clemson), A’ja Wilson (South Carolina), and Jessica Withycombe (Clemson - Crew).  He was named the 2014 SCISA State Coach of the Year.

“I’d like to personally thank John for his leadership and commitment to the Highlander basketball program for the past seven years,” Heathwood Hall Athletic Director Jeff Whalen says.  “We are happy that he will be able to spend more time with his sons as they grow, and that he will continue to be close to our athletic programs.”  O’Cain will continue to work at Heathwood, coaching other sports and potentially staying within the Lady Highlander basketball program on a lower level.

Heathwood’s search for a new head coach will begin immediately.
