Heathwood Hall sophomore Maryah Nasir has been named Midlands-area Player of the Week for September 21-28 by ColaDaily.com. Maryah earned ColaDaily’s attention by winning the girls varsity race at last weekend’s Lake Murray Invitational with a time of 18:27.
Maryah has now won all three of the races she has competed in so far this season. She has the third-fastest 5K time among all high school girls in South Carolina and the fastest 5K time among all girls in the Midlands. Her time in the Lake Murray Invitational meets the milsplit.com National Elite Silver Standard and is the second-fastest time in Heathwood history behind Sydney Ellen’s best time of 18:03 from last year.
Those are remarkable achievements for any runner, but they’re especially notable because Maryah is just a sophomore. Girls Cross Country Coach Willis Ware is thrilled to have her on the team not just because of her talent but also because of her positive attitude, which was on full display when ColaDaily asked her what advice she’d give fellow student-athletes.
“Never give up on something no matter how tough a situation may seem,” she said. “Believe and you will excel!”
Come cheer on Maryah and the rest of the Heathwood Cross Country team on Wednesday, September 30 at the Highlander Invitational meet! Races start at 5:00 on Heathwood’s cross country course, located behind the football fields.
